Wie wird der Sacharow-Preis für geistige Freiheit vergeben?
Das Europäische Parlament vergibt seit 1988 den Sacharow-Preis. Mit dem Preis werden Menschen oder Organisationen ausgezeichnet, die sich für Menschenrechte und Grundfreiheiten einsetzen. Der Preisträger des vergangenen Jahres ist Denis Mukwege.
Kandidaten für den Sacharow-Preis können von Fraktionen oder einer Gruppe von mindestens 40 EU-Abgeordneten vorgeschlagen werden. Die Ausschüsse für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten und Entwicklung wählen danach drei Finalisten aus. Die Entscheidung über den oder die Preisträger/in liegt schließlich bei der Konferenz der Präsidenten des Europäischen Parlaments, die sich aus dem Parlamentspräsidenten und den Fraktionsvorsitzenden zusammensetzt.
